Background
The Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) is a Kenyan non-governmental organization (NGO) that was established in 2006 under the NGO Coordination Act. ICE was established in response to a clear need in Kenya to promote culture\'s inherent and natural role in environmental and resource management.
ICE works with communities to rediscover the significance of local knowledge and naturally endowed resources/potentials in improving livelihoods and conserving the environment. As a result, communities can take control of their own development and break free from the cycle of poverty. Nationally, regionally, and globally, ICE collaborates with like-minded organizations, institutions, and individuals.
About the assignment
The Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) seeks to engage a web designer to re-design the organization’s website www.icekenya.org to a more navigable and modernized site. The new site is aimed at helping ICE to achieve the mandate of promoting environmental conservation and natural resource management; enhancement of indigenous knowledge in community-based environmental and resource management initiatives; and facilitating cultural-based learning leading to social and ecological wellbeing of biodiversity.
Goal of the assignment
To refurbish ICE website to a user-friendly site that will be instrumental for information and knowledge sharing. The website will be key to ICE’s mission, vision and objectives as outlined in the organization’s strategic plan 2022-2026.
Scope of the assignment
The vendor is expected to;
- Dynamize ICE website and social media pages
- Design website and social media banners
- Link website to ICE social media pages
- Upload new content
- Upload photos and videos
- Update plugins
- Update Google Map
- Increase the existing websites dynamism
- Update SEO
- Update website security
- Align website fonts
Obligations of ICE as the contracting authority
The contracting authority shall be obliged to;
- Provide all documents necessary for the review
- Provide a website outline with menu labels and desired sub-menus
- Provide Content including text, photos and videos
- Pay the agreed charges - 30% at commencement and clear the remaining 70% balance after completion of assignment.
- Deduct and submit withholding tax to KRA as required by the laws of Kenya
Obligations of the consultant
- Develop a website with 10 main navigation bars and their sub-pages using WordPress Content Management System
- Complete the assignment within a month after signing of contract
- Maintain confidentiality in all his/her dealings with ICE
- Return all the materials both hard and soft shared by ICE (in case any)
- Submit a draft within 10 days for review
- Train dedicated ICE staff on website management
NB:
- The vendor shall not sub-contract another party to undertake the assignment.

- Possess excellent editing skills for content and photos

- Ability to build a website using WordPress Content Management System

ICE accompanies communities in rediscovering the value of local knowledge and local resources in livelihoods improvement and environmental conservation. ICE is seeking to recruit a highly competent individual to fill the position of Project Officer, Food Security and Livelihoods.
Purpose of Position:
To provide support in the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Community Livelihoods programs being implemented among local communities by the Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE).
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Programme Officer, Food Sovereignty and Community Livelihoods, the holder of this position will be required to support in formulation, development and implementation of specific projects’ goals and objectives within the Food Sovereignty and Community Livelihoods Programme.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Spearhead the conceptualization, innovation, planning and management of Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) projects
- Participate in conducting monitoring and evaluation of Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) projects
- Prepare project documentation by ensuring consistency with goals, objectives and organizational strategic plan
- Participate in developing annual work plans for the Food Sovereignty and Community Livelihoods projects in accordance with the strategic plan
- Guide and supervise field contact persons (field-based project assistants), identify their training needs and address them through elaborate capacity building
- Collect and summarize field assistants progress and monitoring reports
- Provide information and support to the farmer groups to ensure implementation of activities in accordance with the project and organizational strategic objectives
- Support collaboration and partnership with relevant government bodies/departments (at national and county levels) and partner with NGOs in activities related to Food Security and Livelihoods in the target areas
- Provide information needed for and participating in developing progress and annual reports
- Participate in organization fundraising efforts through development of funding proposals
- Develop and implement a value-chain and marketing strategies for farmer groups produce for community sustainability
- Support in documentation of case studies, success stories and media linkages
- Support in ensuring gender mainstreaming during project implementation as well as identifying advocacy opportunities in the community
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education and Extension, General Agriculture (Agronomy) or related fields such as Agroecology
- Persons with training or experience in organic farming in addition to the degree in agriculture- related field will have added advantage
- Minimum 2 years’ work experience in a related field. Those with practical experience in fundraising and/or managing donor-funded livelihoods projects are highly preferred
- Good communication skills and facilitating or training skills.
- Good knowledge and experience in working with computers particularly Microsoft office.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to work in diverse cultural contexts
- Good organization and time management skills
- High degree of innovativeness and creativity

The Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) seeks to recruit a consultant to undertake end-term evaluation of the “Harnessing indigenous knowledge for rehabilitation of community forests and sacred natural sites in Kilifi County”.
ICE is a national indigenous Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that was started in 2006 and is registered in Kenya under the NGO Coordination Act. ICE was founded out of a visible need to promote the inherent and natural role of culture in environmental and resource management in Kenya. ICE vision is that of empowered communities harnessing indigenous knowledge for healthy people and ecosystems. Its mission is to promote indigenous knowledge for environmental conservation and to enhance the livelihoods of local communities.
The Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) in partnership with the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme (UNDP GEF/ SGP) and in collaboration with other stakeholders in Kaya forests conservation along the Kenyan Coast implemented the project whose aim was strengthening conservation of these critical coastal ecosystems through harnessing indigenous knowledge for use in protection and rehabilitation of sacred Mijikenda (Kaya) forests and other community forests in Kilifi County. The target kaya forests were Kaya Jibana, Kaya Fungo and Kaya Rabai (kaya Mjimuphya).

The Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) seeks to recruit a consultant to undertake end-term evaluation of the \"Promoting non-timber and ecological practices for food and income security\" project in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Muranga and Embu Counties.

ICE in partnership with Biovision Foundation has finalized a three-year project (2019-2021) in the four counties. The project aimed at promoting non-timber and ecological practices for food and income security by engaging farmers in promoting sustainable agricultural practices through multi-approach initiatives to build farmers’ resilience against the effects of climate change and enhance biodiversity conservation.

Job summary
The Advocacy and Communications will be responsible in developing, organizing and executing a wide range of activities to influence policy on natural resources, agriculture and community livelihoods and gender and increase the visibility of the organization, and its work within its project areas. The officer will also play an integral part in networking, and maintain strong organizational partnerships with different stakeholders and actors.
Job Responsibilities.
- Develop advocacy/communication strategies and engagement plans in collaboration with the programme and project staff.
- Organize advocacy engagement and communication activities, media outreach and training.
- Support in development of content for annual newsletters, media, and other communication materials concerning ICE work.
- Create and maintain strong organizational partnerships with farmer groups, CBOs, county and national government, donor agencies and other likeminded organizations to achieve the intended goals.
- Ensuring that advocacy and communication activities are properly planned and implemented.
- Identify key opportunities in the short and long-term to influence policy processes.
- Support programme and project staff in capturing and documenting best practices and success stories.
- To represent the organization at meetings relevant to ICE work.
- Share the work of ICE with key constituents, funding partners, donor agencies, policy makers, network organizations and the media.
- Participate in project report writing and proposal development.
- Support in building collaboration with national, county government and civil society organizations and other relevant actors and stakeholders.
- Ensure gender mainstreaming in all programs of the organization.
- Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Director.
Qualifications
- University degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Community Development or a related degree from a reputable University.
- Five years demonstrable experience in communications and advocacy, working with farmer groups, community based organization, county and national government, donor agencies, and other like minded organizations.
- Experience in managing organization website, developing website content and managing social media accounts (twitter, Facebook, instagram, and Linkedin).
- Strong knowledge of local policy and advocacy context.
- Advanced working knowledge Ms Word, Ms Excel and Ms PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Agroecology in an asset.
- Excellent written and oral skills in English and Kiswahili.
