Conserving Bio-Cultural Diversity
For the past three years ICE has been piloting strategies in indigenous conservation guided by elders. These strategies have involved dialogue led by elders to cultivate interest in indigenous knowledge; protection of sacred sites as sources of indigenous conservation knowledge and production and planting of important indigenous trees.More

     
   

Strengthening Institutional Development
ICE has an operating secretariat in Thika, with five programme and administrative staffs. Established in 2007, the secretariat coordinates filed activities with communities as well as liaising with funders and stakeholders, including government departments. The secretariat has a Director, Program Manager, Project Officer, Accountant, Administrative Assistant and a Communications Officer employed on contract basis.More

     
    Promoting Community Reconstruction
Since 2006, ICE has worked with four communities to bring back learning spaces traditionally used to impart essential societal values in young people. These spaces have since colonial times been replaced by formal schools and new faiths. Our experience when working with these communities is that young people are struggling to identify who they are since they do not understand their roots and they are not fitting perfectly in the new western world view.More
     
    Strengthening Research and Advocacy
By the year 2008, ICE was supporting communities to form community research groups comprised of elders and young people. The elders shared their stories about seeds with the youth as a way of passing knowledge to the other generations. Village-based field committees were also formed led by elders who are the custodians of local social, ecological and governance knowledge.More
